Special Education

Rich Township High School District 227 is committed to providing a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment with full educational opportunities to children with disabilities, between the ages of fourteen through twenty-one, regardless of the severity of the disability. Special Education and related services are available to meet the unique needs of students and are specifically designed for each student. 
 
For students eligible for services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), School District 227 will follow procedures for identification, evaluation, placement and delivery of services to children with disabilities provided in the Illinois State Board of Education’s Rules and Regulations to govern the administration of special education. 

than 6.8 million children ages 3 through 21 receive special education and related services each year in the United States. 

We offer a continuum of placement options that are determined based on individual needs. Each of these children receives instruction that is specially designed: 

  • to meet his or her unique needs (that result from having a disability); and 

  • to help the child learn the information and skills that other children are learning in the general education curriculum. 

Placement options include: 

  • a general education class  (Co-Teaching Model)

  • a special education class 

  • a special education program or school 

  • at home/hospital   

  • public or private institution 

Rich Township 227 has several specialized programs that are offered in-district to support our diverse learners.  
 
Special education aims to increase self-sufficiency and to decrease dependence to empower students. There is an array of services that are utilized to provide special education. Special education services include: 

  • Special Education Teacher 

  • Social Emotional-School Social Worker 

  • Speech therapy-Speech Pathologist 

  • Occupation therapy-Occupational therapist. 

  • Health Services-Nurse 

  • Psychology- School Psychologist

  • Occupational Therapy 

  • Paraprofessional 

Additional supports and services that are available include transportation.
