Buildings & Grounds - About Us
The team is responsible for maintaining the physical school plant and grounds efficiently and effectively in a condition of operating excellence for full educational use.
Asbestos Management Plan
In October 1986 the U.S. Congress enacted the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). Under this law, comprehensive regulations were developed to address asbestos problems in public and private elementary and secondary schools. These regulations require all schools to inspect for friable and non-friable asbestos, develop asbestos management plans that address asbestos hazards in school buildings and implement response actions in a timely manner.
The Buildings and Grounds Department maintains an asbestos management plan for each campus as required by law. Plans are kept in the Building Foreman’s Office at each campus along with the Buildings and Grounds Department Office located at the Rich East campus. The plans are available for review by the public upon a 48 hour notification to the school district.
Safety Data Sheets
Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all chemicals used and stored by the Buildings and Grounds Department are kept on hand in the Buildings and Grounds Department office along with at each campus. These sheets are kept for the purposes of review by staff members and first responders. The SDS includes information such as the properties of each chemical; the physical, health, and environmental health hazards, protective measures, and safety precautions for handling. SDS booklets are updated annually and available to the public within 48 hours of a request.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
Integrated Pest Management emphasizes inspections and communication with the school administration and stakeholders. The focus of the program is to identify and eliminate conditions in and around the school which could cause pests to be a problem. Applications of pest control materials are made only when necessary.
District 227’s IPM process includes the application of herbicides and pesticides in and around the campus. All personnel responsible for pesticide application are certified through the State of Illinois. Notifications are posted on campus entry ways and on the District website three (3) days in advance to any pesticide application.
Parents and guardians of a student may request to receive a written notice before any pesticide or insecticide is used in a school building or on school grounds.
Parents or guardians requesting written notice must submit such request in writing to:
